Suggested Steps in Establishing a MESA Program for 2009-2010
- Decide grade level, number of students, and how to recruit the target population.
- Recruit students. Speak to students personally!
- Set a date for a parent meeting to explain the MESA program. Steps 2 and 3 may be reversed depending on the school’s situation.
- Send home Student Enrollment Forms and Permission Forms.
- Add SASID numbers. We have asked your building's clerk to add SASID numbers to the Student Enrollment Forms. More details to follow about this process.
- Return completed forms with SASID numbers to Elzbieta Towlen, Science Coordinator, at the LSC as soon as possible or by early December. Keep copies of the forms for your records. Do not send Permission Forms. All State MESA Forms may be found on the CMESA website or Documents & Forms on the St. Vrain MESA website.
- Plan your year using information from the website (stvrainmesa.org) located under the Advisor Info link- Programming Resources and Kits Available and from the MARK Resource Fair.
- Plan early for the MESA Expo that will be held in late April from 6:30-8:00 PM at Heritage Middle School. Attendance is required.
Important! Why we need State Assigned Student ID Numbers
The state of Colorado has assigned an ID number to all Colorado students to replace social security numbers. This statistic helps track students as they move from district to district and even into college. It would be extremely helpful if MESA is able to track students through college because MESA students are sought by employers for summer jobs, internships and future employment. They know that MESA grads are responsible, intelligent and mature. If the state office can provide contact information for our college students, our corporate sponsors from HP, Janus, NREL, Lockheed Martin and others can contact them regarding opportunities with their companies.
In addition, the state of Colorado will make scholarships available to students who have participated in pre-college programs like MESA if those programs can provide their SASID numbers. Please be sure to use the new Student Information Forms and include the SASID numbers.
